The Grand Canyon, located in Northwestern Arizona USA, is considered one of the seven natural Wonders of the World because of its overall scale and size combined with its beautifully colored landscape. The canyon stretches an impressive 227 miles long and averages over ten miles wide, and is one of the deepest gorges on earth at one mile deep. The canyon was created through erosion over the past 6 million years by the action of the Colorado River as it cut through the Colorado Plateau. The Grand Canyon became a US National Park in 1919 and is visited by 5 million people each year.
