Originally built in the year 80 AD the Roman Colosseum (originally named the Flavian Amphitheatre) was created to host many events for the citizens of the Roman Empire to enjoy. These events included gladiator battles, animal fights, public executions and naval ship battles. Yes, they used to fill the lower bowl of the Colosseum with water using an aqueduct connected to the stadium so that ships could duke it out. The Colosseum could host up to 60,000 Romans at a time. It even featured a retractable roof of sorts, as it had shades that could be drawn from the top of the building's structure out over the spectators to shield them from rain and the glare of the sun. As it approaches its 2000th birthday, the ruins of the Roman Colosseum still stand in the middle of Rome, Italy and is now a tourist attraction. A whopping 6 million guests per year visit the awesome structure every year.
