The Great Wall of China was declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. At 22,000 kilometres long, it is the largest man-made structure on Earth and is made out of a variety of materials, including stone, brick, rammed earth, and wood. It is the collective name of a series of fortification systems generally built across the historical northern borders of China to protect and consolidate territories of Chinese states and empires against various nomadic groups. The Great Wall was built over many years: it is believed the original Great Wall was built over a period of approximately 20 years, but the Wall which is in evidence today was actually built during the Ming dynasty, over a period of about 200 years. The most famous section of the Great Wall -- Badaling -- has been visited by over 300 Heads of State and VIPs from around the world, the first of which was Soviet, and is also the busiest section of Wall which has been restored. Over 10 million people visit the Great Wall of China every year.
