Pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, have large, protective keratin scales (similar material to fingernails and toenails) covering their skin, and are the only known mammals with this feature.
There are already a number of known extinct species, with four surviving species currently found in Asia and four in sub-Saharan Africa.
They live in hollow trees or burrows, depending on the species, are nocturnal, and their diet consists mainly of ants and termites, which they capture using their long tongues.
Traditional Chinese and Vietnamese medicine believes their scales to have medicinal properties, and they are threatened by poaching for this reason -- similarly in Ghana. Their meat is also considered a delicacy, and they are the most heavily trafficked mammals in the world.
These factors, together with the heavy deforestation of their natural habitats, has rendered three of the the surviving eight species critically endangered, three endangered, and two vulnerable.
