The panda bear is usually known either as the 'Giant Panda', or just as the 'panda', and is native to South Central China. It is a folivore, with bamboo shoots and leaves making up more than 99% of its diet.
One of the main reasons that panda populations have declined is habitat destruction. As the human population in China continues to grow, the pandas' habitat has been taken over by farming, deforestation, and other development, pushing them into smaller and less livable areas. Habitat destruction also leads to food shortages.
Wild population estimates vary; one 2015 estimate considered there to be fewer than 2000 individuals living in the wild.
